History of Chiropractic
The Chiropractic profession was founded by D.D. Palmer in 1895 when he was treating a man named Harvey Lillard who was deaf. As D.D. Palmer felt the neck of Mr. Lillard, he came to the conclusion that a bone in his neck was “out of place.” D.D., formerly a magnetic and alternative healer, performed what we call today a spinal adjustment. After that very first adjustment, Mr. Lillard stated that he was beginning to hear again. D.D. recognized that he had found something quite remarkable. He went on to open the Palmer School of Chiropractic located in Davenport, IA in 1897. Evidence of manual manipulation of the spine and joints of the body, such as bone setting, has been found in many different ancient cultures and the benefits were felt by many. Even though chiropractic, which means “done by hand,” may not have been a completely new idea, the application, philosophy and education required to administer treatments make this healing art stand out from all of the rest.
What is a Subluxation?
Chiropractors are the only health care professionals who are trained in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of a subluxation. To begin to understand what this is let’s look at the root of the word. A luxation is the term for a complete dislocation of a joint. Therefore a subluxation, generally speaking, is a partial or slight dislocation of a joint. The bones of the spine, or vertebrae, are the most common areas when talking about subluxations. In fact any joint in the body can be subluxated. But what does this mean to you? When a joint is subluxated, especially in the spine, it can restrict motion, cause improper motion, or be “stuck.” This improper movement of a joint can cause additional wear and tear on different areas of the bones which may lead to early osteoarthritis and pain. Subluxations can also decrease the signals traveling from the brain to the rest of the body, or from the body to the brain, which can cause specific organs or body systems to function at a less than optimum level. This altered functioning of the body can lead to pain, dysfunction or decreased immune defense leading to sickness or disease.
Chiropractic Facts
Most professional athletes and Olympic athletes utilize the services of chiropractors to keep their bodies performing at the best possible level. Chiropractors are commissioned from all over the world to treat athletes at the Olympic Games.
When a student graduates from a chiropractic college, they are granted a Doctorate of Chiropractic degree. Chiropractors have to pass four, sometimes five sets of national board exams before they are able to be licensed to practice in any state. Some states even have their own state board exam in addition to the national exams. Chiropractors are licensed as health care professionals in all 50 states as well as many countries around the world. Chiropractors and medical doctors have very similar education while in school. The main difference is the method of treatment. Medical doctors treat their patients with pharmaceuticals and surgery, where as chiropractors treat their patients by adjusting the spine and other parts of the body to help correct biomechanical function and allow the body to use its own unique ability to heal itself.
What makes the “popping” or “cracking” sound? When a chiropractor makes a spinal adjustment, there is a release of gas in the joint space. This release of gas makes the common sound which is called an audible. A common misconception is that if you didn’t hear anything, then the adjustment didn’t work. When in fact there are many adjusting techniques that are developed to correct a subluxation without making any noise.
